This summer, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by author and educator Steve Cuden for his podcast StoryBeat. We got into it.  Like two old friends talking over a cup of coffee, I have never felt more comfortable talking about making music and being a singer.

Bridges

July 22, 2019 - Reviewed by John Hoglund for Cabaret Scenes

Multi-award-winning jazz vocalist Shirley Crabbe fills her romantic album with quality tracks that are in a league with the best of them. Every cut matters. Her clarion-toned, rangy contralto is fueled by elegant phrasing and supple nuances that meld together with some remarkable musicians led by Donald Vega. It all makes for an intelligent disc that has garnered praise from the jazz world. And, she received a 2019 Bistro Award for this CD.  Her sound is sweet and sassy and in perfect control with a warmth that on occasion recalls Ella Fitzgerald (who is her biggest influence).

Coming July 28th to Maureen's Jazz Cellar...

The Incomparable Ethel Waters is a one-woman show featuring songs made famous by America’s first Black superstar: Ethel Waters. Seasoned with stories drawn from Ms. Water’s autobiography His Eye Is On The Sparrow, this show celebrates the music and life of Ethel Waters, who was a woman of the theater, a celebrity and an influential singer whose distinctive jazz singing and interpretive abilities influenced many of America’s greatest vocalists including Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald. This show also draws attention to Ms Water's  search for social justice, and racial and gender equality in America. In the spotlight are several of Ms. Waters signature songs and innovative arrangements: Throw The Dirt, Sweet Georgia Brown, Am I Blue, (What Did I Do To Be So) Black and Blue?,   and Little Black Boy.

Directed by Gerry Geddes
Shirley Crabbe - voice, David Budway - piano (75 min)

Great evening at this years' Berks Jazz Festival. Wow they have some great singers living in Reading PA! Ms Toni Lynn rocked the house with her powerhouse voice - at 75 she put me to shame LOL. AnNette Hines' voice was absolutely soul stirring! And the oh so talented Mr Bobby Lyle schooled us all in the art of showmanship. I had a lot of fun!!  Pinched a nerve the week before and wasn't sure how I would make it through the night - but alas, prayer works and it doesn't hurt to have that good ol' "the show must go on" mindset.
